10/12/2016We have received the following from Cllr. Nigel King -
POTENTIAL SALE OF THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION, THE JURGENS CENTER AND SURROUNDING LAND ON HARVEST ROAD, ENGLEFIELD GREEN
Parish priest Father Hugh Flower has confirmed that the sale of Church buildings and land on Harvest Road, Englefield Green is an option being investigated as a means to grow the parish which embraces Thorpe, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green and Virginia Water. Father Hugh has related that the parish is in agreement to locate to one site.
The Bishop of Arundel has confirmed that the parish is investigating possibilities for the future provisions of buildings including those located on Harvest Road, Englefield Green, however any plans to move from the site or whether to retain the buildings and land would need to be submitted to the Diocesan Finance Committee before a decision can be made.
Our Lady of the Assumption site was gifted to the village of Englefield Green by Gerard and Miriam Jurgens in the late 1920’s. They paid for the construction of the church building which was designed in a Romanesque style by Joseph Goldie. English Heritage describe the building as a “great church, better composed and more competently detailed than most” The church is also one of Runnymede Borough Council’s listed buildings.
